Grand Opening Celebration for New USO of Illinois Rock Island Center

USO of Illinois to Celebrate the Opening of its Sixth Center in Illinois with a Special Meet & Greet for Military and Their Families

United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois will celebrate the opening of its newest USO Center facility on Rock Island Arsenal.  The new center is poised to be a key resource for thousands of Quad-Cities area military and military families as it will sponsor programs and services specially focused to support and enhance the quality of their lives.  The USO Rock Island Grand Opening Celebration will feature USO Santa Claus, USO Holiday Carolers and a special performance of “Tales of Winter” presented by The Putnam Museum as part of USO Discovery Kids programming. More than 200, including area military and representatives from local government, civic and commerce organizations, are expected to attend the event.

USO Centers are a “Home Away from Home” for active duty military and offer reading libraries, free Wi-Fi access, lounge facilities, computers, phone, snacks and TV/DVD/Video Games. The USO of Illinois serves over 300,000 active duty, guard and reserve military and military families throughout Illinois and the Midwest region with over 300 programs and services offered year-round, and USO Center facilities at Navy Pier, Midway Airport, Great Lakes Naval Station, O’Hare Terminal 2, USO American Airlines Cyber Canteen at O’Hare Terminal 3 and now the Rock Island Arsenal.

Winner of the USO of Illinois ‘Design Our Ornament’ Contest Announced

Original Drawing Submitted by the Son of Two Illinois Active Duty Parents Selected as the Official 2011 USO of Illinois Holiday Ornament

CHICAGO – There’s holiday cheer in the air and the United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois invited area military children to capture the spirit of the season and submit their original drawings for the annual “Design Our Ornament” Contest. 11-year-old Kalil Sims, the son of two Illinois active duty military parents, submitted the winning design. The USO of Illinois ornament contest was created to give area military children the opportunity to express their creativity and the chance to receive a monetary gift to put towards their future education. Kalil will receive a $400.00 college savings contribution through The Freshman Fund (www.thefreshmanfund.com) plus a $100.00 gift certificate to Toys ‘R Us®! The contest is an example of the programs and services the USO of Illinois provides to enhance the quality of life of America’s troops and their families.

The Limited Edition 2011 USO of Illinois Ornament will be available for a $35 donation beginning Friday, November 25, 2011. Proceeds from the sales of the ornaments will benefit the USO of Illinois’ Discovery Kids and military support programming. USO Discovery Kids provides specially designed year-round educational, recreational, and cultural events and programs lift the spirits and nurture quality family time together for military families.

Blackhawks to Wear Authentic Camouflage Jerseys During Warm-Ups on Veterans Day

The Chicago Blackhawks will wear authentic camouflage jerseys during warm-ups on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, before hosting the Calgary Flames at the United Center at 7:30 P.M. This marks the third consecutive year the Blackhawks will wear the jerseys in support of the USO of Illinois and those that serve or have served in the military.

These one-of-a-kind jerseys will be autographed by the player that sports them and auctioned online at chicagoblackhawks.com until November 17 (ending at 9:00 P.M.), with all proceeds benefitting the USO of Illinois. In addition, autographed camouflage jerseys of Blackhawks Ambassadors Tony Esposito, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Denis Savard will also be available in the auction.

The Blackhawks will also host an official enlistment ceremony for all branches of service of the military during the first intermission where over 20 service members will recite a one-minute oath. Several Blackhawks Season Ticket Holders and other fans donated their tickets to allow these military members and their guests the opportunity to attend Friday’s tilt.

Shugart, will accept the USO Angel Harvey  Heart of a Patriot Award on behalf of the Miss Universe Organization. The award is named in honor of Lynne “Angel” Harvey, credited as the “First Lady of Radio, and honors those who have gone above and beyond to support our troops. On Friday, October 14, 2011, prior to the gala, Alyssa will participate in the Pepsi Pack Care Package event where she and USO of Illinois volunteers and representatives from Pepsi will stuff more than 1,000 care packages full of items provided by Pepsi to be sent to deployed troops.

Summer’s Last Hoo-Ah!: Clark After Dark Summer Block Party Presented by the USO of Illinois

CHICAGO – On Thursday, August 25th, 2011 the USO of Illinois, through the support of Alderman Brendan Reilly of the 42nd Ward, Boss Bar, Miller High Life, Hubbard Inn, AT&T, The Mix 101.9 FM, Star Events and FanFueled, will give summer its last “HOO-AH!” by rocking the block at Clark After Dark. The USO of Illinois’ third annual Clark After Dark block party celebrates America’s military service members and their families. Proceeds from the event benefit the USO of Illinois programs and services that serve over 300,000 military personnel and military families in Illinois.

WHEN: Thursday, August 25, 2011 – 4:00PM-10:00PM

WHERE: 420 N. Clark St., On Hubbard between Clark and LaSalle

The event kicks off at 4 p.m. and will feature live music by Chicago favorites Maggie Speaks and Liquidated Damages, military-themed games with special activities and challenges, military and vintage military vehicle displays, food and drinks specials, silent and live auctions and raffle prizes. Raffle and/or ticket packages begin at $15 and are available exclusively at FanFueled.com. Clark After Dark will be held in River North at 420 N. Clark Street on W. Hubbard Street, between W.
