USO of Illinois Supports Homebound Troops During the U.S. Armed Forces Annual Holiday Mass Exodus This Weekend at O’Hare

United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois will offer food, shelter, travel assistance and all the comforts of home to thousands of troops making their way home for the holidays during the U.S. Armed Forces annual Holiday Mass Exodus. USO O’Hare centers will stay open 24 hours a day beginning Friday, December 16th through Sunday, December 18th, 2011. USO Centers are a “Home Away from Home” for active duty military and offer reading libraries, free Wi-Fi access, lounge facilities, computers, phone, snacks and TV/DVD/Video Games. This holiday weekend marks the One-Year Anniversary of the USO American Airlines Cyber Canteen O’Hare Center and the launch of the United Through Reading® program at the airport. United Through Reading® offers parents who are about to be deployed the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children which helps unite families emotionally while they are separated physically.

The USO of Illinois serves over 300,000 active duty, guard and reserve military and military families throughout Illinois and the Midwest region with over 300 programs and services offered year-round, and USO Center facilities at Navy Pier, Midway Airport, Great Lakes Naval Station, O’Hare Terminal 2, USO American Airlines Cyber Canteen at O’Hare Terminal 3 and the Rock Island Arsenal.

USO of Illinois & American Airlines to Celebrate the One Year Anniversary of the American Airlines Cyber Canteen USO Center at O’Hare Airport

United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois in partnership with American Airlines will celebrate the one year anniversary of the USO American Airlines Cyber Canteen at O’Hare.  The Cyber Canteen has been a “Home Away From Home” for over forty thousand active duty military traveling through O’Hare Airport during its first year. Located in Terminal 3, the Cyber Canteen offers a reading library, free Wi-Fi access, lounge facilities, computers, phone, snacks and TV/DVD/Video Games. The anniversary event will be the official launch of the United Through Reading® Program at O’Hare. United Through Reading® offers parents who are about to be deployed the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children which helps unite families emotionally while they are separated physically.

USO of Illinois to Celebrate the Opening of its Sixth Center in Illinois with a Special Meet & Greet for Military and Their Families

United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois will celebrate the opening of its newest USO Center facility on Rock Island Arsenal.  The new center is poised to be a key resource for thousands of Quad-Cities area military and military families as it will sponsor programs and services specially focused to support and enhance the quality of their lives.  The USO Rock Island Grand Opening Celebration will feature USO Santa Claus, USO Holiday Carolers and a special performance of “Tales of Winter” presented by The Putnam Museum as part of USO Discovery Kids programming. More than 200, including area military and representatives from local government, civic and commerce organizations, are expected to attend the event.

Winner of the USO of Illinois ‘Design Our Ornament’ Contest Announced

Original Drawing Submitted by the Son of Two Illinois Active Duty Parents Selected as the Official 2011 USO of Illinois Holiday Ornament

CHICAGO – There’s holiday cheer in the air and the United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois invited area military children to capture the spirit of the season and submit their original drawings for the annual “Design Our Ornament” Contest. 11-year-old Kalil Sims, the son of two Illinois active duty military parents, submitted the winning design. The USO of Illinois ornament contest was created to give area military children the opportunity to express their creativity and the chance to receive a monetary gift to put towards their future education. Kalil will receive a $400.00 college savings contribution through The Freshman Fund (www.thefreshmanfund.com) plus a $100.00 gift certificate to Toys ‘R Us®! The contest is an example of the programs and services the USO of Illinois provides to enhance the quality of life of America’s troops and their families.

The Limited Edition 2011 USO of Illinois Ornament will be available for a $35 donation beginning Friday, November 25, 2011. Proceeds from the sales of the ornaments will benefit the USO of Illinois’ Discovery Kids and military support programming. USO Discovery Kids provides specially designed year-round educational, recreational, and cultural events and programs lift the spirits and nurture quality family time together for military families.

Frank helps the USO at Midway Airport in Chicago revamp their space to help better serve our military members. He shows how to build storage cabinets, computer desks and the ultimate bookshelf.

Blackhawks to Wear Authentic Camouflage Jerseys During Warm-Ups on Veterans Day

The Chicago Blackhawks will wear authentic camouflage jerseys during warm-ups on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, before hosting the Calgary Flames at the United Center at 7:30 P.M. This marks the third consecutive year the Blackhawks will wear the jerseys in support of the USO of Illinois and those that serve or have served in the military.

These one-of-a-kind jerseys will be autographed by the player that sports them and auctioned online at chicagoblackhawks.com until November 17 (ending at 9:00 P.M.), with all proceeds benefitting the USO of Illinois. In addition, autographed camouflage jerseys of Blackhawks Ambassadors Tony Esposito, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Denis Savard will also be available in the auction.

The Blackhawks will also host an official enlistment ceremony for all branches of service of the military during the first intermission where over 20 service members will recite a one-minute oath. Several Blackhawks Season Ticket Holders and other fans donated their tickets to allow these military members and their guests the opportunity to attend Friday’s tilt.

“Once again this year, the USO of Illinois is honored to share in the patriotic support for our nation’s service members and veterans through our great partners at the Chicago Blackhawks and Boeing,” said USO of Illinois President and COO, Alison Ruble.  “Now, more than ever, America’s military and military families need our support.  The jersey auction initiative has true impact.  It not only helps the USO continue to provide vital programs and services to our troops and their families year-round, but it also empowers Blackhawks fans with a unique way to give back to those who sacrifice so much for us.  Our sincere thanks go out to the fans, the Chicago Blackhawks and The Boeing Company.”

Miss USA Alyssa Campanella will be the honored guest at the USO of Illinois Star-Spangled Salute Gala on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Navy Pier where she and President of the Miss Universe Organization, Paula M. Shugart, will accept the USO Angel Harvey  Heart of a Patriot Award on behalf of the Miss Universe Organization. The award is named in honor of Lynne “Angel” Harvey, credited as the “First Lady of Radio, and honors those who have gone above and beyond to support our troops. On Friday, October 14, 2011, prior to the gala, Alyssa will participate in the Pepsi Pack Care Package event where she and USO of Illinois volunteers and representatives from Pepsi will stuff more than 1,000 care packages full of items provided by Pepsi to be sent to deployed troops.
